The Highs and Lows of Finding Clients

Having worked for Citytv, Chum and Rogers for 30 years, I am no stranger to the challenging job of finding customers. So when I began on this new odyssey of finding clients for CHIME earlier this year I knew it would be an adventure.

As I met with clients I’d worked with in the past many told me, “Anat, people didn’t buy into the product you sold, they bought into YOU.” Having had some time for personal growth and better understanding of who I am and what my value proposition is one thing was clear to me. I really cared. Not that lip service kind of “we care. “ The authentic and true ownership of a project that people sense is real and cannot be faked.

So I travelled up and down the 401, the QEW, the DVP, and every road in between, having countless meetings with various prospects. I flew to Montreal. Twice. And through it all I heard many things:

“We have an agency that handles all of that.”

“We don’t have any budget left for this year.”

Or the heartbreaking “Oh you’re too late, we just hired a programmatic buying agency.”

Staying focused and positive with this kind of rejection is not easy. However, as Winston Churchill said so well: “Success comes from going from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm.” So undaunted, I carried on.

I truly believe that when you work hard, do your best and focus on the task at hand it is never a waste. It’s the law of the universe and it’s always rewarded.

So our team diligently responded to multiple and competitive RFPs. We have been tasked with many projects and proposal requests. And I’m excited to report that we have found several fantastic clients to work with.

I am grateful for this unique time and opportunity, and the chance to work with a dream team that includes my sister Karen. Together, we have developed some killer creative ideas, planned exciting campaigns that deliver for our customers, and had a lot of fun in the process.

These are the things I keep in mind as I inch my way through traffic-filled streets, and deal with hearing yet another ‘not this year’ from a prospect. Because, as Franklin D. Roosevelt famously said, “Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort.”
